
Dmitriy Khmel'nitskiy
Architect, architectural historian, journalist.
He was born on September 26, 1953, in the family of poet, architect, and archaeologist Sergey Khmel'nitskiy (1925–2003).
From 1970, he studied at the architectural faculty of the Tajik Polytechnic Institute. In 1973, he moved to Leningrad. In 1977, he graduated from the Repin Institute.
After graduating, he worked for several years as an architect in Leningrad, designing residential buildings in Severodvinsk.
In 1987, he emigrated to Germany.
In 2003, he defended his dissertation on the history of architecture of the Stalinist era for the degree of "Doctor of Engineering Sciences" (Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften (Dr. Ing.) at the Berlin Technical University. The dissertation topic: "Stalinist Architecture. Ideology and Style (1929–1960)" (German: Architektur Stalins. Ideologie und Stil. 1929–1960).
He is the author of monographs on Soviet emigration, national ideas, urban planning, and architecture in the USSR. He compiled collections on the Second World War and books about Viktor Suvorov.
His works have been published in the journals "Kontinent" (Paris, Moscow), "Dvadtsat' dva" (Tel Aviv), "Znamya", "Mir" (Berlin), and newspapers such as "Literaturnaya gazeta", "Moskovskiye novosti", "Russkaya mysl'" (Paris), "Evropa-Tsentr" (Berlin), among others. The main topics are the history of Soviet architecture, art, and Soviet history.
